Walmart has maintained inflation-beating prices, new study shows

THE WHAT? A study of the pricing of some 589 branded products conducted by Dataweave shows that Walmart has consistently kept its prices lower than its competitors and below the rate of inflation for the past year, according to a report published by Reuters.

THE DETAILS The study tracked prices of the same products both in store and online at Walmart, Kroger, Target and Amazon daily for just over a year. While US inflation averaged 7.5 percent over the period, Walmart’s prices rose just 3 percent on average, versus a 7.5 percent increase at Amazon, and a 9 percent hike at Kroger and Target.

THE WHY? The study comes as Walmart faces antitrust accusations in a court battle that alleges the US retail behemoth colluded with Energizer to inflate battery prices for other retailers. In an email to Reuters, Walmart said that the data supports its commitment to ‘Every Day Low Price’.
