US States lining up to ban PFAS

THE WHAT? Several US states are considering ushering in a ban on the use of so-called ‘forever chemicals’ in cosmetics, according to a report published by the Associated Press.

THE DETAILS California, Colorado and Maryland have already passed prohibitions on cosmetics containing the controversial chemicals, due to become law in 2025 while Vermont’s Senate has given final approval to a bill that purports to ban manufacturers and suppliers from selling or distributing cosmetics or feminine hygiene products containing PFAS.

THE WHY? The US Environmental Protection Agency has warned that PFAS have been linked to cancer, developmental delays and organ damage. Federal limits on forever chemicals in drinking water have been proposed accordingly.
