Shiseido develops world’s first 3D skin measurement system

THE WHAT? Shiseido and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has developed an innovative measurement system capable of analysing the three-dimensional face shape as well as optical properties of facial skin such as subsurface scattering light.

THE DETAILS The J-beauty giant and its research partner measured the facial skin of more than 1,000 people using the new system, analyzing subsurface scattering light, which is an important factor for skin translucency, and found that the subsurface scattering light decreases with age and is associated with five factors, including melanin level and the condition of the stratum corneum.

THE WHY? The system will allow the J-beauty giant to measure skin objectively as well as inform new product development.
