THE WHAT? Kao and Analytical Science Research Laboratories have discovered a key cause of frizz to the outer layer of hair. The pair found that UV rays can cleave disulfide bonds, causing distortion in a similar way to perms.
THE DETAILS The effect is compounded by distortion of the hair post exposure – for example by contact with pillows at night.
THE WHY? The pioneering study will inform the development of future hair care and styling [products aimed at preventing and reducing frizz. Indeed, Kao plans to roll out a line of UV protection for hair.
