THE WHAT? Edgewell has added additional lots to its nationwide recall of three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spay SPF30. The original recall was announced last July.
THE DETAILS A review has detected trace levels of benzene in some further samples of the product – the sunscreen spray products recalled voluntarilty are packaged in aerosol cans and were distributed nationwide in the US. Retailers have been notified to remove any remaining product from shelves. The brand is offering consumers reimbursement for products with any of the lot codes listed.
THE WHY? While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can, Edgewell said in a statement. Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen.
