Bayer and Beiersdorf settle Coppertone case for US$2.3 million

THE WHAT? Bayer and Beiersdorf have settled a class action lawsuit brought against the Coppertone sun care brand, according to a court notice issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

THE DETAILS The defendants have agreed to a settlement fund, totalling US$2.3 million, granting the full purchase price or average purchase price for covered products to settlement class members who submit a valid claim form.

Beiersdorf will also test for the presence of benzene for at least 18 months following the Preliminary Approval order.

THE WHY? The lawsuit alleged that Coppertone’s spray sunscreens were inappropriately marketed as the presence of benzene was not disclosed. The defendants maintain that the products have always been safe for use and deny all claims and any wrongdoing.
